Due to the low cost of 802.11b/g, or Wi-Fi, access points, we felt it necessary to put this page up.
Throughout several developments and down many roads, just in the southern portion of New Jersey, Center City Philadelphia and on a trip out to Lancaster, PA, I have stumbled onto 3,627 networks, in a process called WarDriving, and have found that around 22% (798) are secured. That means that around 78% (2,829) are open to the public, or worse yet hackers! And of those over 3,627, almost half of them have been left completely unconfigured! That means that the person(s) who bought those wireless access points, made by Linksys (insert any other name brand here ______) Cable/DSL modem routers, and have recently been given away by Verizon to get you to use DSL, just plugged them in and started surfing the net from their couches and back yards.
Now, this doesn't mean that people are driving around your home trying to break in, just I have not done that either, but how well do you know your neighbors? You say "So my neighbor can access the Internet from my connection!", but is that all that's going on?
In a worse case, could your neighbor be a terrorist?
How about a child pornographer?
What if they are sniffing (or here) your network for passwords or other information?
Then you say "Well, I know my neighbors around me, and they wouldn't be doing that!". Well there are other ways for people to get into your wireless network without being next door!
And, if someone is using your Internet connection to perform an illegal action, can they be prosecuted? Only if they are caught! But guess who's IP address will be logged doing that illegal action? You guessed it, it's yours, and everything will be traced back to you!
So, what can IHN Technology do for you? Let us educate you, or point you in the right direction to educate yourself. Or, if you feel more comfortable, let us come out and secure your network for you to guard you from most attacks. Just contact us with any questions you may have.
For $75 (homes or businesses with 1 or 2 access points) or $150 (businesses with 3 or more access points) we'll come out and scan* your network, help you to set up either WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) or WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption (if vendor supported), give you some ideas for changing your SSID and help you get more out of your Access Point or Wireless Router.
*Scanning service is only available for 802.11b and 802.11g networks. 802.11a networks are not able to be scanned, however we can still work with you to secure your network.
